“There is no Big Brother in the sky”

15 January 2010 by Stardust

Christopher Hitchens tells it like it is. I referenced many of the things that Hitchens has said in debates and discussions with my god believing friends and family members. The believers squirm, they make up responses, and finally get frustrated and say they know there is a god, know what they believe is true without providing one lick of evidence, and turn away from the conversation. For every religious email I get from now on, I am sending them this video link in return.

Christopher Hitchens on the ignorance of believers

I also can’t wait to use this footage. He completely nailed it, much more eloquently than I could have. I look forward to quoting him.

  2. ChuckA:

Yeah, Stardust, nobody, IMO, quite “nails it” like Christopher Hitchens.
What!…sober OR somewhat inebriated? I only say that (and I’m an almost 24 yr. ex-boozer) because he’s always getting offbeat YouTube comments about his supposed drinking from obvious idiots who have no other comeback to counter his razor sharp logic. If I’m not mistaken, and according to his own comments, he’s moderated his drinking in the last few years.
    Anyway…
A really nice edit of selected portions from a debate between Hitchens and Frank Turek, at VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) in 2008.
Here’s another really nice Hitchens segment…amongst so many…RE “religious vs. empirical knowledge”:

And…here are some details on the whole debate:
    “The Essentials:
    Tuesday, September 9, 2008
    7:00pm – 9:00pm
VCU: Commonwealth Ballroom in the Student Commons
    Richmond, VA

The Moderator: Timothy Hulsey, Ph.D., is the Dean of the Honors College and Associate Professor of Psychology. Prior to coming to VCU, he was Director of the Honors Program at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas…..
    The Debaters:
Frank Turek is the founder and president of CrossExamined.org and its primary presenter. Frank is a coauthor of two award-winning books: I Don’t have Enough Faith to be an Atheist, and Legislating Morality.

Christopher Hitchens is an English-American author, journalist and literary critic.”

For anyone interested in seeing the complete debate (& also trudging through the, IMO, excessively loud Turek):

As long as I’m into linking; here’s the link to the 2nd Debate:
    Debate Topic: Does God Exist?
At the College of New Jersey; 31st March, 2009
“(1-14) Christopher Hitchens vs Frank Turek (Debate Nr.2)”

Again, IMO, the always annoyingly shouting Turek!
As one YouTube commenter remarked at Part (4-12):
    fubintien (3 weeks ago):
“I love how Hitchens barely even warms up like he normally does: he just comes out with guns blazing. Love it. Exactly what needed to happen after Turek basically vomited all over the lectern.”

  3. Inari:

Hitchens definitely nails it. I’ll have to remember some of those quotes.
