This coupled with the idea that if you die you will go to heaven suggests a religious mandate. Now, this took place in an Army of draftees but I suspect the implication that you are a righteous, religious and an evangelical killer is still utilized in the services for the reason that to kill another human or be killed, you have to feel that you will be saved one way or another. Why haven’t we noticed this long ago; the best fighters are those who willingly die for a fundamentalist belief. All those crosses on the graves of the war dead are only to mesmerize, justify and placate our innate gullibility. In world II there were the dive bombers (Hara Kiri), now we have the Islamic fundamentalist bombers and finally the fundamentalist who kills his own. Perhaps the reason that we are having so many psychological breakdowns in our voluntary Army is that, just maybe, there is a more secular disposition than there was in the past and this produces cognizant dissonance.
