Yeah, Bob…that hilarious talk has, by now, even become a rather popular online “Classic”; which, I think, goes back to the…to be exact?…(November 7, 2006) “Beyond Belief” Conference.
[The only reason I know that is because of my rather nerd-like archive of online videos.]
Which makes me wonder about this year.
It’s always, like the TED talks, and Randi’s annual”Las Vegas Atheist Convention”, all marvelous and enlightening get togethers.
We should all, I think, be so “lucky” (and wealthy enough) to attend?

^ Correction…pardon my ‘analality’?…on further research, it was, evidently, a kind of humorous, rather ad lib, addendum; interspersed on Sunday, November 5, 2006.
It’s kind of amazing, to me, how long ago that now seems.
Not far after Sean left us.(?)

I’m guessing that’s why I don’t remember this video. That time was just a complete blur. I don’t remember much from that time at all.
And I was working, too — have no friggin idea how the hell I did any of that.
And the students still gave me shitty evals. They were specific, too: “I know he had to go to a funeral or something, but he really made the course boring.”
Hey, thanks, Sparky.

That stinks, Bob. Many students seem as if they think that a professor or teacher is an android with no real life. Many also think the world revolves around them. When they have problems, even as trivial as “I overslept” they get pissed if the instructor is not very “understanding” about their stupid little problems and few have had to deal with real problems yet. One day the young ones will grow up and understand some of the crappiness of life and be more empathetic towards others when shit happens. If any of these students who gave you bad evals were older, then they were oblivious and/or self-centered and don’t give a shit about other people.
I understand the “blur” you are talking about.

Love this video–Thanks Bob. Even though I’ve seen it before, I love Tyson, so it was enjoyable to watch it again.
Tyson mentions the ball-socket joint of the shoulder as being an impressive example of something beautiful. While, indeed the shoulder is an impressive example of function, the biomechanics are somewhat flawed, and sooooo much can go wrong with the shoulder so easily (the collar bone, being the only boney connection between the shoulder blade and the body, is the easiest bone in the body to break and a good number of us can look forward to entirely destroyed rotator cuffs if we live long enough).
Even the examples of “great design” in the human body are flawed.
