I had a xtian girl-friend once who told me I “believe in nothing.” I advised her for a long, long time. Then I smacked her. I beat her. Metaphorically.

Tommy and Lynda–Yeah, I usually respond by telling people who say this that I believe in plenty of things for which I am given evidence–and that’s plenty for me, thank you very much.

If reincarnation is real and I come back wearing a burka, I’m on the next boat to a secular state. This is barbaric as is usually most my impressions of Islam.

This is the kind of stuff I bring to xtians attention when they tell me “you have to believe in SOMETHING. Something is better than nothing.”

Just because I am an atheist doesn’t mean I believe in nothing. I believe in LOTS OF THINGS! Like freedom of belief, the right to walk down the street without being assaulted, the right of women not to be raped. I just don’t believe in some invisible sky daddy.

Since there’s more “nothing” or empty space in every molecule than actual stuff. Nothing is actually better than something. It takes a lot of nothing to make something work.

That is a metaphor.

That is NOT a metaphor.

Does this Mr Hamza really think people don’t see through his lies?

I am relieved to read (thanks, k9!) that Islamic leaders have tried to set Mr Hamz straight on the subject of wife assault and that beating one’s wife is apparently not a generally accepted practice among Muslims in Australia. Of course we do have historical evidence from places like Afghanistan that not all Muslims agree on the subject of wife assault. Most of us have seen the video of Taliban men beating women in public who have been so disobedient as to think it was okay to appear in public without a male family member to escort them. Something in the Islamic traditions and teachings must lead to ambiguity on the matter.

Of course, many xian men don’t actually believe a wife can be raped by her husband either. It was only in 1976 that some of the US states enacted laws to protect women from marital rape. It is still difficult to prosecute and unlike rape by strangers a wife must report the rape within a shorter time frame after the assault in order for the courts to take action (in many US states).

That film by the Gunn Brothers (see post by Bob earlier) doesn’t help matters either. Women who make such statements about feminism are traitors to all women in my opinion.

K9–People like Durkadurka are so slimey. So often, their comments are “taken out of context.” Making them the victim, and the reporter/reader of the news “insensitive” or even “racist.”

In what context can this be taken as anything but deplorable? In the context of the 6th century middle east, I guess. Get with the times, Durkadurka.

Metaphorical, my ass. You can’t just throw in the word “metaphorical” after the fact and make it all better.

There is no god. Your faith based ideology doesn’t mean jack shit in court. Assault is assault. rape is rape.

Appeals to invisible sky daddy who said this was acceptable are meaningless since there is no invisible sky daddy.

Hoffy…if you’re still around to read this; I just came around…a bit later than usual today…to catch up on the new Posts; especially Bob’s latest additions.
Obviously, I don’t know how serious Travdawg’s comment was RE the use of the word “crazy” in bringing your name into the mix.
I hope, indeed, he was just doing it in jest. Maybe he can enlighten us on that account?
I personally feel one has to be very careful, especially when commenting here on GifS…a Site dealing with such a sensitive subject (and very sensitive people!) from the get-go…about fellow atheists; particularly, when one doesn’t really know them well enough to make any assumptions.
I can only speak for myself…obviously…but; I’ve enjoyed very much your candor, insights…and often sensitive personal revelations about your life experiences. Even your, shall we say…stream of consciousness style…punctuation, and other idiosyncratic (but charming!) “flaws” included; once I got the gist of your ultra-free style of expression, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying…AND…daily, come to each Post looking forward to your contributions to our rather “offbeat group”.

I don’t think I’m alone in saying: PLEASE!..don’t take one comment made as any reflection on the rest of us…in other words…
Please continue making your presence known…Or…maybe…like that old song:
“Doncha Go Away Mad!”…?
