Trials for Parents Who Chose Faith Over Medicine
WESTON, Wis. — Kara Neumann, 11, had grown so weak that she could not walk or speak. Her parents, who believe that God alone has the ability to heal the sick, prayed for her recovery but did not take her to a doctor. After an aunt from California called the sheriff’s department here, frantically pleading that the sick child be rescued, an ambulance arrived at the Neumann’s rural home on the outskirts of Wausau and rushed Kara to the hospital. She was pronounced dead on arrival. [...] About a month after Kara’s death last March, the Marathon County state attorney, Jill Falstad, brought charges of reckless endangerment against her parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann. Despite the Neumanns’ claim that the charges violated their constitutional right to religious freedom, Judge Vincent Howard of Marathon County Circuit Court ordered Ms. Neumann to stand trial on May 14, and Mr. Neumann on June 23. If convicted, each faces up to 25 years in prison. [...] About 300 children have died in the United States in the last 25 years after medical care was withheld on religious grounds, said Rita Swan, executive director of Children’s Health Care Is a Legal Duty, a group based in Iowa that advocates punishment for parents who do not seek medical help when their children need it. Criminal codes in 30 states, including Wisconsin, provide some form of protection for practitioners of faith healing in cases of child neglect and other matters, protection that Ms. Swan’s group opposes.

Our beautiful 14 month old daughter died tragically in 1994 she died in the Intensive care unit where we saw staff who tried with all their heart to save her, they were all deserving of of nothing but praise, if cheesarse was here he would be on his fucking knees kissing their feet because unlike those peices of shit who allow their children to die such awful lingering shocking deaths these wonderful human beings gave their all for LOVE of Holly, they were REALLY religious people, not the fucking hypocrite scum filth like the Neumanns, here recently we had the same shit go down and those freaks are in jail for many years because their not religious, or god believers or anything like that, THEIR FUCKING MURDERERS, when I hear about filth who do such shocking things it makes me cry, I mean literally cry, it hurts that much to think of what that beautiful little kid went through because of religion, anyone who supports these beasts is a NAZI a god damned fuckin Nazi.

Talking about stupid Xians, well here on this mornings news we had a Islambic cleric in Sydney tell his congregation that it is totally ok to beat and rape your wife, I swear I’m not exaggerating, he was caught on camera and it’s all over national TV, he goes on to say that as long as you don’t make them bleed or bruise them that it’s all fine, as if their cattle Xian child murderers Islambic women rapers YAY religion is just so moral, that’s what makes me angry, that as an Atheist somehow I lack morals, and their out murdering kids and people support them, well fuck me ……………

It must be the very hardest thing for your child to die. I can’t imagine how much pain that is. My only experience is when my youngest brother died. I saw the pain in my parents and how deeply it hurt. We all have enough pain and misery in our lives. That said I just can’t imagine how people like this can even begin to stand on any type of principles when they willingly allow their own child to die.
I have a relative who was a Nun. She devoted her entire life to Childrens hospital. I know for a fact that her order(?) was very pragmatic when it came to the overwhelming reality of health and what faith could do. These are not nuns who prayed for your health these are the nuns who would smack you upside the head and tell you to get to a hospital. Kind of along the lines of “GOD gave you a brain you better start using it”
Oh but to these fuckwits who pray for god to inervene seem to think that these nuns are not true xians. That is one of the things that has always baffled me. It also occurs to me that having known this woman that with or without god I’m pretty sure her life would have tracked the same way.
I also wonder how these people justify allowing their children to die but are opposed to abortion and even in some cases contraception. It seems to be the same thing to me.

How does a government that promotes faith in gawd and quotes from the babble expect its citizens to not do this sort of shit? The deaths of these innocent children rests squarely on the shoulders of those who foster such delusions. President Obama has just fostered such delusions on national TV. Wake up Americans!

Oh, and the title of this post shouldn’t be “Xians Gone Stupid”. Xians ARE Stupid. It’s not just a small segment of their population. These stories are about people who take the “logic” of their faith to its ultimate end. They aren’t the stupid ones. They’re the ones who have actually tried to make sense of the illogical doctrines they have been taught by the main stream xian churches. Main stream xians cannot divorce themselves from this fringe and try to tell us they are somehow better or smarter. They aren’t. They are responsible for these deaths just as much as if they had ripped pages from the Bible and shoved them down the throats of these children choking them to death.

Hoffy, I too am sorry to hear about your little daughter. One never gets over something like that. I lost our first daughter in the delivery room 32 years ago this January 27 and gob botherers were telling me it was “gawd’s will” and not our time to have kids and I thought was a practical joker this god is? Just let me go through the entire pregnancy, and then labor and delivery and then this god decided it would be best not to let me have her? The fact was that the hospital where I was at (Jackson-hicksville-Arkansas) at a military hospital no less, they were a bunch of morons who chose to not pay attention to fetal monitors. Fortunately, we moved back north and though I had problems with the pregnancies of my three live children, I owe the doctors of the high risk pregnancy ward and the neo-natal intensive care units here in civilization and lifetime of gratitude, not some invisible sky daddy who my fundie relatives were singing praises to for the safe delivery of our three kids.
It’s a good thing, for their children’s sake, that most god believers believe in science and medicine far more than they do their imaginary friends. All parents who withhold medical treatment for their sick children for any reason should be convicted.

Thank you for your words of care, I too can only say how I empathise with your own grief at these events that life brings to us, Holly’s death was a turning point for me when a stupid fundie said to me that I shouldn’t be sad as I was going to meet Holly in the after life, as long as I came over to their Cheesarse gang, I came close to whacking her it was so offensive, I went on a religious journey to find some solace but what I eventually came away with was the reality that Religion is based on nothing but egocentric lies perpetrated by individuals who are themselves eternally lost in their own desire for immortality, self obsession is their driving force and they are unable to free themselves from the fear of their own mortality, because they can’t get comfortable with life on lifes terms they create a belief system to ease that fear, actually I learned most of that after I gave up on those hypocrites and did my psych units as part of my sociology studies, that REALLY opened my eyes and I knew I must become as dedicated to truth as they are to the sky daddy, religion is lies, pure unadulterated bull shitology,my in your face attitude was inspired by watching the fundies at the churche’s, I learned how they become monsters for cheesarse and MOO ham MAD, mmmmmmmmm I thought I’ll go hard too, at times I shoot the bloody messenger though LOL, I’m slowly learning to be more tactful but they so totally piss me off that at times I just want to scream SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU C%&Ts………..

When will Christians learn that their right to religious freedom ends when it violates the law or the rights of other people? Just because your religion says that only God can cure sickness doesn’t mean that you should be granted an exemption to the laws that everyone else has to follow.

I am wondering if the parents will bring up separation of church and state as their defense. They only call on this defense when they are in trouble so figure many will be claiming that the government isn’t suppose to get involved in their action.

sargoth, thanks. I’ve had Xians tell me that they are sorry that my misfortunes have made me “angry” against god. I tell them what really makes me angry is meddling know-nothing xians psychoanalyzing me according to their own delusions.

Exactly. And these people try to say that is what their child also wanted, but that is only what their child was brainwashed to believe that is what they wanted because a child believes fantasies can be real. Having a belief is one thing, but when that belief causes danger to others then the law must step in. People can’t just go around killing other people because their religion says they can. Withholding medical help from their children for curable illnesses is criminal.
