Blind Obedience
30 December 2008 by StardustWe are all familiar with the story from the Bible where God tells Abraham to kill his son, and Abraham is willing to follow through with it. This is no story with any good morals to it, as Don Baker and Matt Dillanunty from The Atheist Experience discuss. It is a story of blind obedience to a god of evilness, and illustrates just how cruel this god of Christian mythology is.

Right off the bat, just reading your intro comment, Stardust, something occurs to me that is so overlooked by almost everybody…probably because so many of even us atheists…were brainwashed in all the buybull crap…is the more accurately, perhaps, placed evil of the bonehead fucks that made up all that shit in the first place. I’ve said something to that effect before, regarding the time period when so much mythology bullshit was made up, that I can’t imagine how absolutely ignorant and wacko the people in those times must have been. “The Desert Brain Fried Phenomena” perhaps? In other words SERIOUSLY sick fucks!
Let’s face it; they more than likely really knew absolutely NOTHING about Logic, critical thinking, and of COURSE…any real Science. It was lucky if any of the Greek materialist Philosopher’s writings of ca. 500BCE ever made it to those moronic tribes. Most people were disease ridden, (understandably) totally illiterate, uneducated, etc…and not too much un-like the game of “Telephone”, by the time there was anyone even CAPABLE of writing the stupid shit down, the stories probably INCREASED in horrific viciousness.
My favorite joke, which I’ve used many times here on GifS, is referring to the absolute fuckhead Leviticus, as “Leviciousness”.
The same can be applied, of course, to the ultra delusional, obviously nasty minded, pedophile asshole…”Mohammered”. Caroons fuck…fucking dart boards are in order!
(No reference in that asshole name spelling is intended to insult our occasional Internet…friend(?)…of course!)
After all…the insane mess going on in the WHOLE Middle Eastern area is connected to those Mythological Fuckheads of old. How utterly stupid the human race has been…and continues to be!
FUCKING AARGH!!!

^ Caroons fuck = Cartoons fuck
[Hmmm...is there such a thing as a Caroon?]
Hoffy?…Do you know?

placed evil of the bonehead fucks that made up all that shit in the first place.
The Bible was indeed made up by a bunch of Middle Eastern fundamentalist fuckheads, who loved violence and thrived on killing things and tormenting and torturing others and even harmed their own family members…and still goes on over there in today’s world. Just consider the honor killings of daughters that happen on a regular basis in some extreme fundamentalist muslim cults. They think that Barbaric behavior is justified because it’s in their mythology books that they cherish so much.

I had to check that one chuck, nah not that I can see, the old abraham story, god damn, or rather damn god, the real issue here is that if a supposed ” higher power” asked someone to off their kid then the said ” higher power” is in effect asking you to MURDER someone, there’s no ifs or buts it’s frickin murder and considering that the same “higher power” gave a commandment that says THOU SHALL NOT KILL then this god is inciting one to murder, that’s just sheer HYPOCRACY, but hey what’s new there, Islam has fuckhead Mullahs telling the sheeple to kill daily for Allah and it’s cool, this is just another example of the lack of logic monotheistic Tards live with and accept, I have grown so weary of dealing with this intellectual malady that it makes me want to cry, that we live in 21st century and people accept that is tragic, the issue has another side to it as well, intelligence quotient’s indicate that generally we are regressing and the average IQ is sub 100, that means that these folk are not really in a situation to be expected to be able to assess logic and reason, they simply do not have the grey matter, the general dumbing down of society has led us to this terrible state, as hard as you try you’ll never teach a chimp algebra, basically we live in a society of bourgeois chimps, we reguarly use the minnesota personality test and it’s scary to see how fucking crazy and stupid people are, that idiot from hartwick Herr fuckin Sears is a prime example of the Idiot savant complex, another of the chimps malady’s, these people go to uni and get degree’s but they havn’t got the complex lateral thinking abilities that allow them to see fiction from reality, their the Idiots who say shit like,” well science thinks it has all the answers and all facts” that is absolute bull shit that’s the great thing about science, there’s no such thing as a concrete fact in science, everything is a hypotheseis that has some form of empirical background, what’s correct today may be proven wrong tomorrow, that’s real science’ open and transparent not closed and intransient like these religious cretins, the Abraham story is just another of their anachronisms dragged kicking and screaming into contemporary society, it’s amental Illness, now that’s a fact……………….

Chuck, a caroon is British slang for 25 pence, lol!

Just a little plug for the inherent nihilism of xianity…
31 December 2008, on 11:29 am
Thanks Trav!…That’s good slang to know.
I’ll have to remember that on my next (and only) trip to the UK…
(checks bank account)
Ummm…That’d be, on the…
“12th of Never”?
31 December 2008, on 11:52 am
the real issue here is that if a supposed ” higher power” asked someone to off their kid
In this day and age when someone murders their children and says that Gawd told them to do it, no one believes them and they are charged with murder and either death penalty, locked up in jail for the rest of their lives, or are committed to a mental institution.

Bob, great link to a great post. Yep, Job is another one of those stories about the sadistic god dicking with poor Job, putting him through trials and tribulations as a test of his faith. But why would an all-knowing God need to do this because if he knows everything about everyone and how they will react to such torture and testing, the whole thing is just pointless sadistic entertainment for this god.
It always bothered me when I was a church goer when the pastor would use the book of Job to make people feel better about their own problems. Then people actually went home feeling they are carrying some special burden given to them “lovingly” by some abusive meanass Sky Daddy and accept their trials with such piety. Looking at it as an outsider now, it is all very quite insane how people choose to believe that some invisible man is jerking their chains.

The abraham story is in the bible stories for children book my wife reads to our son.
31 December 2008, on 2:33 pm
Carlos, It was also in a “Bible Stories for Children” book that I had as a child and I was always worried that Gawd might tell my parents to kill one of us just for a test. Terrible what unnecessary horror religion brings to the lives of children. The story of Abraham, among others, are the part of the fear that is instilled in children to scare them into believing, or at least pretending do.
31 December 2008, on 6:47 pm
Star, when I went to church with my mom on Christmas, they actually used Abraham as a good example of a family man.
31 December 2008, on 7:08 pm
Phew, as a child I never had bugger all religious shit, my grandy’s were sky daddy believers and my grandfather used to read the Wholly Liable every day, our kids have been raised to be extremely wary of any religious nonsense, anyone who reads stories from the Liebull to their kids is a criminal and should be prosecuted for child abuse, Those “religious schools” are terrorist training camps for kids, it’s 2009 and the war on the intellect is still here, had the JWs here the other day, America sure knows how to breed em, Egoistic selt righteous dullards, hey Trav I lived in the UK and I never knew that, the caroon thing I mean, on another subject, the Tards here now are using the Racist tag agaunst anyone who speaks out against their religion, Mooso turkeys mainly, they will stop at nothing, as I had to explain {using crayons and writing slowly} LOL this is about Ideology and geneology isn’t an issue, the JWs thought my slagging off the middle east was Racist too, Tards are bereft of any lateral thinking, it’s a pre requisite for Tardness, and word play, damn that really throws them, I used hypocracy not Hypocrisy on a Xian blog and they couldn’t grasp that one either , they couldn’t see the crazy, word play mmmmm spell stuff backwards and your speaking in tongues,LOL, the war goes on………………………….

A Happy and Healthy New Year to all.
1 January 2009, on 12:42 am
See, there’s one inherent error in the criticism of Abraham going off to kill his son: according to the bibble, when Isaac was born, Abe’s invisible voice predicted that Isaac’s seed would be become kings. So, 8 years later, he gets told to ‘do’ the kid, but hey, he’d already been promised the kid would be a king, or the father of kings. He’s hardly going to be impregnating women @ the tender age where his balls haven’t dropped, will he?
Hey, happy holidays & all that humbug, y’all!
1 January 2009, on 2:21 pm
I LOVE the Laurie Anderson intro.
1 January 2009, on 4:26 pm
I find it disturbing that there are still people who hear the voice of god telling them to kill their children.
I was also puzzled years ago about the idea that god knew what was in yuor heart and mind. Why then did god need to test Abraham?
I logically concluded that it was and still is a bunch of hooey.
Happy New Year.

“Mohammered… No reference in that asshole name spelling is intended to insult our occasional Internet…friend(?)…of course!”
No insult taken, amigo. I am definitely a friend and ally.
Been lurking a while. Work has been rough lo these many months.
This voice in my head keeps telling me that I must “kill Isaac” – which I take to mean the bartender from the TV show “Love Boat”. I’d like to get more specific info, but the voice insists that I not question it as a show of faith.
I should probably have that checked out.
Keep up the great blog entries, guys! I love my island of sanity in the vast woo-wasteland that is teh intarwebs. Thanks, y’all – and happy 2009!
2 January 2009, on 11:57 am
Hey MoeHammered…thanks for letting us know you’re still…erm…”lurking”.
Here’s hoping your work situation improves in ‘09.
Yeah…voices in the head; at least if we all continue to realize that no matter how fucked up they may “sound”…they’re from INSIDE our noggins…and they’re our very own, private (fucked up), fabrications!
One nice thing I’ve observed in my many years of monitoring my (Abby Normal) “simulated brain conversations”:
No fucking arguments…i.e…total agreement…always!
[Of course, that's...SO FAR!]
Which is WAY more than I can say about so-called Normal, “Real World” conversations.
Hmmmm…WAIT!…I’m suddenly getting a strange message…
“What’s that…LORD?…Hey!…
Go fuck yourself; you imaginary Psychopathic asshole!”
That’s tellin’ Him…Roit?
“Henya, henya!”
2 January 2009, on 2:11 pm
How timely! I just had an argument with my dad on this very subject a few days ago. When I pointed out that killing is simply wrong, no matter who tells you to do it, he pulled the whole “I think the point is that he was obedient.”
Then I asked him if he would ever kill me if he thought that god was really telling him to. He just glared at me and told me that I was named after good old Abe’s wife in the bible.
I am slightly concerned that his answer wasn’t a firm “No!” Oh well, religious nuttery is nothing new in my household.

I am slightly concerned that his answer wasn’t a firm “No!”
Sarah, how awful! It’s awful that people will be so committed to some ancient words of a mythology book.
Many of you have listened to these preachers on television. They are scary with the way they “interpret” their “word of gawd”. They make absolutely zero sense and if lecturing to a secular crowd people would sit there and think WTF is this dude talking about, or they would laugh them off the stage. I find it astonishing how much authority, and how much these ignoramuses who cannot even speak coherently are respected by the sheeple and how scary it is that if one of these “respected” preachers told their congregations that god said to go home and kill their firstborns some would probably do just that.
3 January 2009, on 8:53 pm
Whoa Sarah, that’s a bit scary, here in Australia we have Hillsong which was founded by a guy from NZ who was a paedophile on the run from the cops, he came here set himself up as a preacher and continued, anyway he had to retire and his son another fruit called Brian Houston took over and this church founded and led by a paedophile which is now our biggest Xian zoo in OZ, even though Brians fathers sex offenses were known about people still followed him, it wasn’t true, naughty people were just trying to discredit him and the cops in NZ were corrupt etc etc, mmmmmm, eventually Bri Bri the son gets up at a service thingy and tells the crowd that it was true the rumour that daddy was a paedophile, to which and I swear I am not making this up, the crowd stood up and gave Brian a standing ovation, these morons gave this paedophile supporter a standing ovation for being so courageous, now if that is not blind twired psycho obedience what is and this church still grows even though it’s well known, it’s the same with Islamic fruits, we all know Muhummad was a paedophile a murderer a rapist a thief a bigamist and insane but fuckheads praise the peice of shit, figure that one out, mmmmmm………………………….
3 January 2009, on 11:45 pm
I am slightly concerned that his answer wasn’t a firm “No!” Oh well, religious nuttery is nothing new in my household.
I’d be afraid for my life, not just slightly concerned.

Everybody should read Woody Allen’s take on this, which appears in the piece “The Scrolls” in the collection Without Feathers. In this version, “God” does the right thing and chastises Abraham for going through with it:
…at the last minute the Lord stayed Abraham’s hand and said, “How could thou doest such a thing?”
And Abraham said, “But thou said—”
“Never mind what I said,” the Lord spake. “Doth thou listen to every crazy idea that comes thy way?” And Abraham grew ashamed. “Er—not really…no.”
“I jokingly suggest thou sacrifice Isaace and thou immediately runs out to do it.”
And Abraham fell to his knees, “See, I never know when you’re kidding.”
And the Lord thundered, “No sense of humor. I can’t believe it.”
“But doth this nto prove I love thee, that I was willing to donate mine only son on thy whim?”
And the Lord said, “It proves that some men will follow any order no matter how asinine as long as it comes from a resonant, well-modulated voice.”
6 January 2009, on 11:27 am
Thanks, Ryan, for that hilarious reference.
“…a resonant, well-modulated voice.”
Like Darth Vader, perhaps?
…and speaking of (atheist) Woody Allen; here’s a link to a nice collection of some of his funny lines:
http://www.boreme.com/boreme/funny-2002/t_woody_allen_quotes-p1.php
Three definite atheist references:
“Not only is there no God, but try getting a plumber on weekends.”
(Getting Even, ‘My Philosophy’)
“How can I believe in God when only last week I got my tongue caught in the roller of an electric typewriter?”
[Update that, perhaps, to "the automatic paper feeder of an inkjet printer?"]
And, considering the current economy…
“If only God would give me some clear sign! Like making a large deposit in my name at a Swiss bank.”
(Selections from the Allen Notebooks, New Yorker)
6 January 2009, on 10:49 pm
Here’s some Allen favorites from Love and Death
“Oh, God is testing us.”
“If He’s gonna test us, why doesn’t He give us a written?”
“If it turns out that there is a God, I don’t think that he’s evil. I think that the worst you can say about him is that basically he’s an underachiever.”
“I was walking through the woods, thinking about Christ. If He was a carpenter, I wondered what He charged for bookshelves.”
“Oh, if only God would give me some sign. If He would just speak to me once. Anything. One sentence. Two words. If He would just cough.”
“Of course there’s a God! We’re made in His image!”
“You think I was made in God’s image? Take a look at me. You think He wears glasses?”
“Not with those frames.”

It always amazes me–the same book that fatuously contends “If you have looked at a woman with lust in your heart, you have commited adultry” would try to sell the story of Abraham as a morality tale–to frame Abe’s actions as admirable. Believers turn around and say “well, he didn’t kill his son, and god didn’t really want him to, it was just a test…” So what–if you are to be consistent here, Abraham killed his son. Unquestioningly. And to what end? To prove to an all knowing god what he already knew–Abe’s a sheep? To send a message to Abe?–”God can ask some vicious things of you, and is to be praised and worshiped.”
What utter non-sense.
