Ditching the crazies

31 May 2008 by Stardust

It’s about time . . .

Obama quits Chicago church after long controversy

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Barack Obama said Saturday he has resigned his 20-year membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago “with some sadness” in the aftermath of inflammatory remarks by his longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and more recent fiery remarks at the church by a visiting priest.
MORE

Republican John McCain also has had his share of renouncing crazy-ass gob-botherers.

Earlier this month, McCain rejected endorsements from two influential but controversial televangelists, saying there is no place for their incendiary criticisms of other faiths.

McCain spurned the months-old endorsement of Texas preacher John Hagee after an audio recording surfaced in which the preacher said God sent Adolf Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land. McCain called the comment “crazy and unacceptable.”

Unfortunately, they continue to cling to the gob delusions and stand firm in that their “faith remains strong” and they “continue to pray” and talk to Jeebus every day. Ditching the crazies seems merely for protecting their political campaigns. BUT…at least they realize they must remain moderate, and they are trying to bring their sky daddy beliefs back to a personal level, which is refreshing.

Maybe now the trend of kissing crazy evangelical butt is coming to an end and we can focus on the real issues of this election?

Christian magicians

30 May 2008 by Stardust

Christian ClownsTravdawg pointed me to this site and I had to read it several times to make sure it was legit and not another satirical site. But it’s real! And the irony is marvelous! Christian Magicians Convention!

Some of the featured events at this international convention are:

Fulfilling God’s mission through your Gospel Magic;

Gospel “magic”…the Bible is full of magic trickery…turning water into wine, rivers turning into blood, parting of the waters, raising people from dead…etc.

Following God’s command through your Chalk Drawings;

[Well, the bible says to come as little children.]

Rejoicing in God’s favor through your Ventriloquism & Storytelling;

[Like God taking through a burning bush, the devil talking through a snake...what talent! And we know the Bible is full of fantastic storytelling!]

Marveling at God’s Grace when children respond to His call through you Clowning

[God just can't seem to get his message across without entertainment via goofy people and strange characters.]

Revealing God’s glory through your Puppetry

[That's what most believers think their god is...a puppetmaster pulling strings of billions and billions of people alive and dead.]

Expressing God’s beauty through the art of Face Painting

[So Gob has a painted clown face??? ]

Declaring God’s word through Drama & Juggling

[Christians love to be dramatic...and juggling would probably wake up the boring services a bit.]

Delighting in God’s way through your Balloon Artistry; . . .

[Balloon "artistry?" WTF??]

Speaking of balloon artistry, check out this video. The very end is hilarious. (I thought so anyway.)

One big “Circus for Jeebus! Thanks Travdawg…that was quite amusing.

Marines Accused Of Proselytizing For Christianity In Iraq

30 May 2008 by Stardust

As one commenter put it, “This is just another example of the creeping sectarian fundamentalism that is taking over our supposedly nonsectarian, nonpartisan, US military.”

Controversial Coin: Marines Accused Of Proselytizing For Christianity In Iraq

According to reporters Jamal Naji and Leila Fadel, residents of the Iraqi city of Fallujah say Marines are distributing coins that urge conversion to Christianity.

On one side, the coin asks, “Where will you spend eternity?” On the other side, it says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16.”

The overwhelmingly Islamic population is predictably outraged. According to McClatchy, a Sunni religious leader in Fallujah is demanding that the Marines discontinue the practice.

“We say to the occupiers to stop this,” said Sheikh Mohammed Amin Abdel Hadi. “This can cause strife between the Iraqis and especially between Muslim and Christians . … Please stop these things and leave our homes because we are Muslims and we live in our homes in peace with other religions.”

The newspaper chain says American military leaders are looking into the allegations.

“Multi-National Force-Iraq is investigating a report that U.S. military personnel in Fallujah handed out material that is religious and evangelical in nature,” Rear Adm. Patrick Driscoll said. “Local commanders are investigating since the military prohibits proselytizing any religion, faith or practices.”

Military officials should move quickly. The War in Iraq has been a disaster on many levels. If it comes to be seen as a resumption of the Christian Crusades, things can only get worse.

My first secular wedding

28 May 2008 by Stardust

marriageSecular weddings are even more beautiful than religious weddings because nothing is in the way. It’s just the bride and groom…giving their hearts and love to each other.

My son, Jeff was married on Sunday afternoon to a really great girl…we love her to pieces. The ceremony was secular at a little non-denomination chapel in the woods. This is the first wedding I have been to where practically everyone was sniffling…because there were no quotes from mythology books, no reading of Bible passages to make everyone glaze over with boredom, no meaningless and soon-forgotten words written by ancient men…these were words written from their hearts, spoken from the heart and all unnecessary ritual, words, etc were not in the way of a genuine expression of love and commitment. Everyone was moved by the service and a few of the religious folks remarked to me that they were quite surprised that for an atheist wedding it was so beautiful.

As my new daughter-in-heart gazed into my son’s eyes, and he gazed into hers, everyone in the chapel could feel the love of two people, who absolutely adore each other with their loving family surrounding them. That’s what life is all about, that is what love is all about. And that is all we need.

I wish them a long and happy life together.

And Now, The Latest Bit Of Skullduggery From The New Age Papsters…

25 May 2008 by KA

crystal-skull-1

The lunatic is in the hall.
The lunatics are in my hall.
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more.

Brain Damage, Pink Floyd

With the advent of the latest Indiana Jones movie, the lunatics are indeed in my hall.

I was having a bit of a natter with my landlady’s niece when the Sci-Fi channel put up this bit of fluff.

Bear in mind, this is the Sci-Fi channel, so I can’t get too indignant over the televised idiocy.

But then these fellas started blathering about how there are “13 skull that are kept separate, and when they’re brought together, will speak the secrets of the world,” or somesuch nonsense. Here’s a little more idiocy, if you have the taste.

No word of a lie, squire, I rolled my eyes, got a bit incensed, and told her, “Oh, I’ll bet they’ll mention Hoagland’s ‘face on Mars’, and Atlantis too.” She laughed.

Not half an hour later, sure enough, my prediction came true. All without the aid of a crystal ball, I might add.

I’ve mentioned Hoagland here, so I’m not inclined to veer off into that avenue.

Let’s face it (no pun intended): it is a neat little artifact. Skulls remind us of our mortality, so much so they figure in just about every occult ’system’ you can just about name. Most animals shy away from their dead, so you can pretty much explain the obsession via evolutionary means.

(Hamlet holding aloft a crystal skull, emoting: “Alas, poor Max, I knew him well. A man of infinite jest.”)

So a crystal skull bespeaks a multitude of symbols: of death, antiquity, a secret past, mysteries beyond count.

Sadly, each and every one of them is a fraud.

And, if you’re not inclined to take the BBC at its word, here’s an anthropologist’s take on the whole shebang.

Really, the entire tale behind these ‘artifacts’ is a sordid mess, replete with all sorts of nonsense.

Like the so-called curse of the Pharaohs, the skull is supposed to bring doom upon those who mock it. Reliable observers have reported extraordinary light effects, sounds and odors, suggesting occult properties. Extensive laboratory tests by the Hewlett-Packard Company, Santa Clara, California, revealed that the skull had remarkable optical properties that it would be virtually impossible to duplicate with modern equipment.

“Brings doom upon those who mock it?” That’s an argument from force if ever I heard one. I’m sorely tempted to find one in a museum, and point and laugh at the stupid thing.

Perhaps the most famous and enigmatic skull was allegedly discovered in 1926 by Anna Le Guillon Mitchell-Hedges, adopted daughter of famed archeologist F.A. Mitchell-Hedges. However, because there is no documented evidence of this, some authorities prefer to hypothesise that the skull was actually purchased at auction by F.A. Mitchell-Hedges in 1943. In an affidavit from 1968 printed in Richard Garvin’s “The Crystal Skull”, Anna claims that she found the skull buried under a collapsed altar inside a temple in Lubaantun (Garvin, photo 25), in British Honduras, now Belize. In a letter to the author in 1970, she also stated that she was “told by the few remaining Maya, and was used by the high priest to will death” (Garvin 93). The artifact is sometimes referred to as “The Skull of Doom” because of its seemingly inexplicable properties and the supposed ill-luck of those who have handled it.

Anna passed away in April 2007, at the ripe old age of 90. There goes that old ‘curse’.

Research carried out on several crystal skulls by the British Museum in 1996 has shown that the indented lines marking the teeth (for these skulls had no separate jawbone, unlike the Mitchell-Hedges skull) were carved using jeweler’s equipment (rotary tools) developed in the 19th century, making a supposed pre-Columbian origin even more dubious. The type of (rather poor quality) crystal is Brazilian, and unknown within the Aztec or Maya territories. The study concluded that the skulls were crafted in the 19th century in Germany.

And for another skeptic’s take (someone else who’s still alive to this day, no less!), here’s Skepdic’s take on the whole sordid affair.

And for your snarky pleasure, here’s a site with some truly frightening photos (hint: the scary photos I refer to are not the skulls themselves. Consider yourselves forewarned).

And one more (a little less frightening, but one I found vastly amusing), if you still want to indulge in some of this tomfoolery.

So, in a nutshell: relatively cool little hoax.

So, I’ll interlock my fingers in my lap, lean back in my chair, and await the ‘doom’ from my mocking the crystal skulls.

Like the Second Coming, it’ll never happen.

This is the Apostate, signing off.

Abraham, Jesus, Mohammed

How wrong do they need to be before they admit it and change their ways?403526418_fdf8cff6d9

Apparently a very long time. Because eventually due to statistics they will eventually be right.
Who is They? Well the Grifters of course. The preachers, priests and all other stupid asses who pander to the masses. The men and women who take money from those who are mentally or emotionally challenged and take it gladly without a bit of remorse or guilt. Pretty much like one of the ultimate grifters of all time Billy Graham.

Do you know how far the moon is away? Two hundred thousand miles. Do you know how far it is to the nearest star? Twenty-five trillion miles. Do you know how many stars there are in our Milky Way? Over one hundred billion. Do you know what the distance is between those stars? In our Milky Way, it averages over seven trillion miles between them. Do you know how many more milky ways they estimate there are now? Over one billion more milky ways.

So I say, if we get to the moon, what have we done? We have not even started. Yet man walks around today saying, “Look what we are doing.” It is a great scientific achievement, but in the midst of the oceans of immensities it is not very much.

All of this scientific advance and scientific achievement of the past few years has brought about a discussion all over the world in intellectual circles about the possibility of the end of the world as we know it. Almost all agree everywhere about the possibility of the end of the world. Some of the titles of the current best-sellers recently listed in The New York Times book review section I am going to read to you. Here they are: NO PLACE TO HIDE; MUST WE HIDE?; THERE WILL BE NO TIME; MANUAL FOR SURVIVAL; FEAR, WAR, AND THE BOMB; MUST DESTRUCTION BE OUR DESTINY?; AFTER DOOM–WHAT? Little went on to say that since 1945 a five-foot shelf of books have been written about the physical destruction of the world.

Our philosophers today–many of them–are admitting the possibility. Bertrand N. Russell recently said he would not give a fifty-fifty chance that one person would be alive on this planet forty years from today.

Our political leaders are talking about the end of the world. A European prime minister recently said, “Time is running out.” An American senator said, “A war of annihilation seems to be inevitable.” Former President Truman said, “Fantastic new weapons are available which could destroy civilization.” Sir Winston Churchill said some time ago as he threw up his hands in despair, “Our problems are beyond us.”

Science is predicting it. A German scientist some time ago said, “It is now possible to depopulate the entire earth.” Rear Admiral Ellis[?], our wartime chief of naval intelligence, said some time ago in an article entitled “Wartime Weapons, More Deadly Than One Atom”–I am going to read it to you, here is what he said, “There are today in the arsenal of several of the great powers, other absolute weapons besides the atomic bomb, physical and psychological weapons more devastating than the atom. They are capable of exterminating the last vestige of human, animal, and vegetable life from the face of the earth. This is not a prediction of horrors to come,” said the Admiral. “These weapons exist now. They are being manufactured right now while you are reading these words. They are not an American monopoly. Several nations are known to have them, and to be making them, and to be proving them. Furthermore, unlike the atomic bomb, they are of such a nature that smaller nations with limited industrial facilities are in a position to develop them.”

In other words, our leading scientists are saying today that there are weapons now in existence that could be unleashed to bring about the destruction and the end of the world system as we know it tonight.

Historians are predicting it. Professor Weber says, “We are now at the end of history as we know it.”

This was from a sermon he gave in 1958. The world is doomed, We’re all going to die , The sky is falling, yada yada. Send money. We have it today as well. The Armegeddonists are practically beside themselves that we could bring about the reign of Jesus. If the President would just unleash the dogs of war on Iran and send the world into full scale war. Then Jesus will return and happy happy will prevail.

The fact that these bloodthirsty sanctimonious assholes will never admit. That a hallucination by some crazy fuck 2,000 years ago is sufficient evidence to bring about the end of the world as we know it. Oh sure that is good enough for some to base their entire lives on and is probably the reason that they reject the responsibility of growing up.

However for many of us it is insufficient and downright absurd. We have walked out of the beast and stand among the men and women who have for all of history stood up to the vicious lies and ridiculous accusations that have come from religious and political ideologies. It is unfortunate that far too many people have simply put their lives on auto pilot and vote with the concensus and seem to think little of continuing the status quo. From their acceptance of any half-baked religious doctrines to the political nonsense we witness today. How often have we heard the line about “change”? “Vote for me and I’ll change the way things are”. Or “Accept the lord into your heart and feel the change”. Blecch!!!

They have been using the same old tired refrains for so long that People find it comforting. The masses have eaten it up and assume little responsibility for the actions of their leadership. And when confronted with the lies and corruption? Most people look away as if their participation had nothing to do with it. Just look at the politicians who pander to the religious and at the same time try to distance themselves from their own actions of funding the war. The senators who voted to go to war but call it Bush’s war. Who claim little responsibility and yet gain some political favor by portraying themselves as against the war. The’re all just grifters with but little consciense or concern for the people they represent. Their only real service is to themselves and their select benefactors who do expect first class service.

And in keeping with the full court press. We hear every day about how the motivation for this whole thing is being preached in many churches. “Keep the people in line”, “Don’t offer them an opportunity to object and they won’t”. When you step back and take a good look at it you’ll see first hand how it is being carried out. We were warned by the founders of this nation about the evils inherent in a blending of church and state. Yet the current religious and political leadership seems to have gotten it wrong. And it is always about power and money.

I used the Abraham Jesus Mohammed bit because of how wrong they were in their own time and how it’s been so many millenia and the wrong just keeps pushing forward.

Rant over.
And now for our regularly scheduled program.

On the lighter side we have. As if we needed to. Jesse Ventura

Louisiana baloney

22 May 2008 by Stardust

creationism1 The Louisiana legislature is about to make a tremendous mistake:

Bogus On The Bayou: Louisiana Legislators Consider Dragging Science Education Back Into The Swamp

. . . Despite frantic objections from public school teachers, the scientific community and advocates of church-state separation, the House education committee yesterday approved unanimously a Religious Right bill designed to undercut the teaching of evolution.

As the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported today, Senate Bill 733 would allow Louisiana public school science teachers to use “supplemental materials” when discussing evolution, global warming and human cloning.

That may sound innocuous, but in fact, the measure is meant to swing open the door to bogus “scientific” materials undercutting the teaching of evolution. The bill is the handiwork of the Louisiana Family Forum, the Discovery Institute and others forces determined to damage science education and roll back constitutional safeguards. They’re using “academic freedom” as a wedge to break down the wall of separation between church and state.

Yesterday’s hearing was packed with home-schoolers wearing stickers in support of the bill. Home schoolers won’t be affected by the measure, of course, so it doesn’t take much analysis to see what’s going on here. (Kids, you may have learned something about politics, but you flunked science. Be sure to tell your momma when you get home so she can change your report cards.)
