Crazy in Alabama
9 June 2006 by Sean
It’s not often that I categorize a post under both “Atheism” and “Stupidity” but this one calls for it. Via The Raving Atheist:
Atheist Holocaust Denier Blames Prejudice for Election Loss
Defeated after winning 44% of the vote in his party’s primary for Alabama state attorney general, Democratic candidate Larry Darby blamed the loss on public misconceptions regarding atheism and Holocaust denial.
“Atheism is just the lack of a belief in a god or gods, nothing more, nothing less,” said Darby. “It doesn’t mean that I reject morality or worship Satan, or require me to take a particular position on any given issue. Unfortunately, old stereotypes are hard to overcome.”
From the Newsday story Raving Atheist links to:
With 99 percent of precincts reporting, the winner, Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson, had 56 percent, or 210,683 votes, to 44 percent, or 162,420 votes, for Larry Darby.
Party officials learned late in the campaign that Darby, the founder of the Atheist Law Center, was a Holocaust denier, and that he recently gave a speech in New Jersey to a white supremacist group. They said they could not remove him from the ballot because absentee ballots had already been sent.
As one commentator on Raving Atheist’s site says:
Thankfully Roy Moore lost the Republican nomination and this asshat lost the Dem nomination, but the numbers were close enough in both cases that you really have to wonder if we should nuke Alabama for our own good.
Raving Atheist had this amusing bit of satire to add:
Darby likewise explained that his Holocaust denial was simply a lack of belief in the Holocaust, and that it would be unfair to draw other conclusions from his historical convictions. “Not everyone who disbelieves in the German Final Solution agrees on tax policy, on school vouchers, or even on who’s responsible for controlling the media to spread myths about concentration camps,” he said. Darby pointed out that reasonable people often disagree over the proof and extent of other alleged genocides, and noted that virtually everyone would profess to be a holocaust denier with respect to the Klingon massacre of Ferengis. “I just believe in one less ethnically-based mass extermination than you,” he added.
Hey, Larry Darby… Stay off our side, you dumb fuck.

Shit, the guy got 44% of the vote. I’m shocked an out atheist who WASN’T a holocaust denier could get 44% in Alabama, or most anywhere else.
Hmm, wait a minute. I don’t think they could. So maybe he actually did BETTER being a holocaust denying atheist than he would have as a non-holocaust-denying atheist. That’s a pretty scary thought about Alabama. But then we are talking about Alabama, after all: http://www.gods4suckers.net/index.php?s=alabama&submit=Search

[Darby] noted that virtually everyone would profess to be a holocaust denier with respect to the Klingon massacre of Ferengis. “I just believe in one less ethnically-based mass extermination than you,” he added.
Isn’t there some corollary to Godwin’s law that states that one loses when they try to invoke fiction as evidence to support a real-world argument? I remember Michael Behe doing the same thing during the Dover Panda trial…

Two comments:
1. The Klingons never massacred the Ferengis. Somehow I find this sad ignorance of Star Trek more offensive than his Holocaust Denial.
2. Darby is an announcer for Freethought Radio, and he makes all the other broadcasters (like me and my wife) look bad. The guy is a pest. Good voice though.

Darby headed up American Atheists Alabama chapter up to a few years ago.
He is a racist, but has an oriental wife. American Atheists have done little to distance itself from Darby with the exception of one article.
Here is what I dug up.

People who deny the Holocaust should be stuck in a time-machine and interned at Auschwitz. Or skinned alive and buried in a pile of salt.
The really scary thing is that when the last Holocaust survivor dies, these nutbags will be able to say that there aren’t any eyewitnesses, and use that as further proof of how correct their whack-job conspiracy theory is.
In any event, what is the point of Holocaust denial? How on earth does it advance the ’cause’ of racism in any way? Is it their postulate that in the absence of the Holocaust, their racist, bigoted, anal-cranial inverted views would somehow be justified? Fuck, you don’t have to deny the Holocaust to be an inbred, bigoted ass-hat. Just look at all of the redneck scum-fuck race-haters around this hick town that I’m unfortunately living in…

Hey, don’t sweat this guy Sean. I’m sure he’s not a “true atheist.” =)

“This is precisely the intent of the Holocaust deniers: by attacking the facts of the Holocaust, and by framing this attack as merely an unorthodox point of view, their propaganda insinuates subtle but hateful anti-Semitic beliefs of Jews as exploiters of non-Jewish guilt and Jews as controllers of academia or the media. These beliefs, in fact, bear comparison to the preachings which brought Hitler to power in prewar Germany.”

I think it was at Respectful Insolence I saw someone suggest that admitting the holocaust would also mean admitting the failure of the Nazis to complete it. This could also explain the (reported, I’m not exposed to much holocaust denial personally) implication of ‘but they should have’.
It is frightening that he could have received so much of the vote, since I can’t bring myself to believe it was something other than his abhorrent policies that secured it.
9 June 2006, on 11:18 am
Keep in mind that the “44%” Darby gathered is 44% of registered Democrats given only the options of him or Tyson. Which is not to excuse a vote for this cretin, just that I’ve only seen the info exposing his retardery here in the blogosphere and wonder how many of those 44% actually knew about it- or his “atheism” for that matter. I also wonder whether, given the locale, Darby might be some sort of plant egged on and funded under the table by the Alabama Repiglickans. I think a Shermanesque march on Alabama might be appropriate so long as we steer clear of historic civil rights sites like Birmingham and Selma and leave the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail alone as potential sites for GOP internment camps.

Also, Sean, a speech bubble for Larry in the visual saying “Monkeywrench, this is Bunny Hutch headquarters. Come in, Monkeywrench.” or “Kenneth, what is the frequency?” might be nice, along with a tinfoil hat. What a maroon.

Ron makes a great point in regards to how this guy would’ve done without the holocaust denial component. Probably not as much as 44%. Also, to Atheist Jew’s point about his asian wife, no one ever said racists make a lick of sense.

Darby likewise explained that his Holocaust denial was simply a lack of belief in the Holocaust,
This was one of my favorites, lack of belief in the Holocaust despite the evidence. I understand this xenophobic asshole’s disbelief in god because of the lack of evidence, but the Holocaust? I am going to stop thinking about it because my brain is not capable of computing this stupidity.
9 June 2006, on 1:55 pm
Hey, Larry Darby… Stay off our side, you dumb fuck.
I’m just really surprised that American Atheists never brought any of that shit up about him. You’d think they’d have half a brain about stuff like that.

“Darby headed up American Atheists Alabama chapter up to a few years ago. He is a racist, but has an oriental wife”
Hey AthesitJew (P.C. Racist): Asian, not oriental!

Austin Cline [Agnosticism/Atheism] has also been following this asshat’s agenda, somewhat frequently.
It’s really amazing how dangerously stupid [or just plain Nuts] this jerk is; and what negative ammunition he gives to those who are fighting against OUR cause of Atheism,…and/or ‘Rational’, civilized, thought, in general.
I don’t know what his age is; but anybody of MY age group [I was born in Dec., 1939] would, in my opinion, need to have been ‘lobotomized’…at an early age… in order to claim that there was no Holocaust. I was too little to realize what was actually going on DURING World War II; but having grown up through the 1940s & ’50s; it was impossible to deny all the information which, eventually, became available in the media; AND, through personal family friends. Later in my life, as a ‘Jobbing Band’ musician for various events; which included MANY Bar/Bat Mitzvahs & Weddings…I encountered many of the survivors of the ‘Death Camps’; and heard first hand accounts of some of the horrors they witnessed and suffered through.
…[Note: "Fuck you, no-talent DJs!"!...OK,...I just HAD to get that off my 'chest'...my 'subconscious' took over!...Sorry...OR...just blame it on my gettin' old, out of date, and cranky!"],…
To continue:…
It’s incredible that Darby and like minded scumbags get ANY attention at all; but then,…a lot of bigotry abounds in the world of the Fundie brain damaged!
Actually,…maybe it would be best if Darby converted to ‘born again’ Xtianity!
Hmmm….maybe, Madalyn Murray O’Hair’s SON could implement the conversion…Wow!…there’s another, uncannily, strange case!
[Of course; don't get me started on Roy ('Mr. Theocracy') Moore!]

Well, sure, he’s crazy. But what abotu Raving Atheist? I mean, we jump all over Darby for his views on the holocaust, a taboo he breaks for sure, so why are we relying on the Raving Atheist, whose extremely anti-choice, and supports “abortion information centers,” that tell lies to pregnant girls?
We’re going to end up rejecting pretty much every atheist, since one thing Darby said was 100% true: we tend to have one thing in common, that we do not believe in gods. If everything Darby says is wrong, then everything Raving Atheist says is wrong as well–which would cancel out this article.
9 June 2006, on 4:19 pm
Please note that this part of the post:
Darby likewise explained that his Holocaust denial was simply a lack of belief in the Holocaust, and that it would be unfair to draw other conclusions from his historical convictions. “Not everyone who disbelieves in the German Final Solution agrees on tax policy, on school vouchers, or even on who’s responsible for controlling the media to spread myths about concentration camps,” he said. is satire. The Raving Atheist made that part up. I was just quoting it because I thought it was funny, but I did not it was satire.

Good points. I don’t know that everything Darby says is crazy… I just think that these things are crazy. Clearly, I don’t believe his atheism is crazy. I do believe as a public figure, he is not doing us much good by combining rational arguments (god talk is malarky) with irrational arguments (the Holocaust never happened). It gives fuel to those who would argue that atheism itself is irrational, whether associating those two beliefs of his is logical or not.
If what you say about the Raving Atheist is true, then that’s one aspect of him that I would say is pretty darn stupid.
9 June 2006, on 8:04 pm
I would love to get a peek inside this guy’s head, sit down and talk to him, just to try to figure him out. Figure out exactly what sort of conviction he has that makes him support this bullshit that anyone without crazy convictions could see is quite obviously bullshit, ya know? An atheist holocaust denier that got 44% of the vote in Alabama, there’s an intriguing story right there. The world is a crazy place.
10 June 2006, on 8:04 am
First Post, I’ve read that his wife is Chinese. Is that not oriental, or am I out to lunch on this one?
Alleee, the difference between Darby and Raving Atheist is tht Darby denies facts and reality much like creationists do with respect to evolution. Darby’s Holocaust denial is similar to an Atheist who believed in a Young Earth. Raving Atheist’s stance on abortion is heavy on opinion. I’m not sure what lies he tells girls, maybe you could fill us in.
It appears that Darby was called a race traitor by his “friends” Here is another article on him.

Francois said:”The Klingons never massacred the Ferengis. Somehow I find this sad ignorance of Star Trek more offensive than his Holocaust Denial.”
*******************************************
A Texan, a Frenchman & a Canadian are out riding horses.
The Texan pulls out an expensive bottle of whiskey, takes a shot, then another, and suddenly throws the bottle in the air, pulls out his gun and shoots the bottle in mid air. The Canadian looks at him and says, “What are you doing?! That was a perfectly good bottle of whiskey!” The Texan says, “In Texas, there’s plenty of whiskey and bottles are cheap.”
A while later, not wanting to be outdone, the Frenchman pulls out a bottle of champagne, takes a few sips, throws the bottle in the air, pulls out his gun and shoots it. The Canadian can’t believe this and says, “What did you do that for? That was an expensive bottle of Champagne!”
The Frenchman says “In France there’s plenty of Champagne and bottles are cheap.”
So a while later the Canadian pulls out a bottle of beer. He opens it, takes a sip, takes another sip, and then chugs the rest. He then puts the bottle back in his saddlebag, pulls out his gun, turns around and shoots the Frenchman.
The Texan, shocked, says, “Why did you do that?”
The Canadian says…..
“Well, in Canada, we have plenty of Frenchmen… but empty beer bottles are worth a dime.”

Atheist Jew:
Here is some background on why some consider the term “Oriental” offensive:
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=545754
I am not taking sides one way or another on such fine points of PCism, but if you used the term here in very Asian San Francisco any time in the last 10 years, you would be viewed as an Archie Bunker type. Whether that is fair or not is not for me to say.
10 June 2006, on 11:47 am
Sean, it might be a Canadian thing, but this is the first time I heard that word “oriental” is offensive. Here is what a search yields. In Southern Ontario at least, Orientals refer to Japanese and Chinese and even some West Indians. Asian usually refers to East Indians. But officially, as in a police report, I think Asian refers to anyone from above.
10 June 2006, on 2:08 pm
I think he has a Chinese wife because a lot of racism and/or sexism takes the form of sexual fetishism. A lot of western men fetishize Asian women because of the way they look and because they are thought to be more submissive culturally. Many western men want Asian wives because what they really want is a servant.

Living as I do in Alabama, I get to witness this states deplorable slide into idiocy much more than most. Two points:
1. Roy Moore lost by a landslide (he had one third of the Republican vote, while Riley had two thirds). Though I’m a libertarian, I voted in the Republican primary against Roy Moore. There was a concerted effort among rational Alabama voters to do so.
2. Larry Darby is a laughingstock among Alabama Atheists as well. Blair Scott, director of Alabama chapter of American Atheists has done much to distance himself and Alabama Atheists from Larry Darby. Scott broke away from the Atheist Law Center when it became apparent that Darby was an asshole. Scott’s feelings are succintly stated in this quote: “Darby is an atheist. That doesn’t bother me; I’m an atheist, too. What bother me are Darby’s actions and beliefs.”
13 June 2006, on 7:36 pm
Nymph, I’ve seen that with Anglo-American men seeking Latin American wives, too; they say they find them “more feminine” than Anglo-American women, but it sounds an awful lot like code for “more submissive” to me. The Hispanic women exploit this as well to some degree because they’re looking for US residency and citizenship to escape situations like poverty and so on.

Jews actively deny the Armenian Holocaust.
(Because jews made up the majority of the progressive “young turks” who carried out the atrocity, similar to what they did in the Urkrane, or at Kaytn)
Even on “the young turks” dot com, (diffined as cheery jewish progressive) you can see 3 very racist jew types. (evidenced in their inbred features) That they call themselves “the young turks” is sickening; they know they are rubbing the goyims nose in this supreme business.
