It’ll take more than faith to heal Cleveland

1 July 2005 by Ron

Reader Jeremy from Cleveland draws our attention to a pathetic story from the home of the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame: The local health museum, HealthSpace Cleveland, has waived a $5,000 rental fee to allow a faith healer to use its facilities. Here are a few excerpts from the coverage in the the Cleveland Plain Dealer (Faith healer to be at health museum; $5,000 fee waived for healing service).

The Cleveland health education museum will open its doors to faith healer Dr. Issam Nemeh on July 10, creating an unusual venue for a purported miracle healing service. HealthSpace Cleveland waived the customary $5,000 rental fee for Nemeh… “We decided not to charge them because a number of board members are supporters of Dr. Nemeh’s work…

The Plain Dealer reported earlier… that Nemeh had sued after being kicked out of a medical residency program at Fairview Hospital [and] that even though Nemeh claimed he worked as an anesthesiologist at Richmond General Hospital for several years, officials at the hospital said Nemeh worked there for only four months.

He probably extorted this concession out of some of the board members by threatening to “faith harm” them. I live out here by Cleveland and will add this to the other factors which help to keep the city proudly deserving of its nickname, “the Mistake on the Lake”.

For some reason I (also a Clevelander) missed this in the PD, though I have been watching the saga of Nemeh. So thanks, though I think you’re probably just insanely jealous that you don’t live in a city in which institutions supposedly based on science are willing to sell their souls so cheap. The PD has recently told us that it’s expanding its religion and ethics coverage (as is the NY Times, and the Times also says it’s going to look at more diverse populations, such as the military, etc.) It really is the good times rolling for the religious right. Thanks for your site. Catherine
