More Schiavo Players

26 March 2005 by Bob

Wow, Schiavo’s just all the rage. Now they’re comparing her to Jesus:

Demonstrators camped outside the Pinellas Park, Fla., hospice where Mrs. Schiavo is a patient have posted numerous signs comparing her ordeal to Christ’s last 12 hours.

One, titled “Good Friday in America 2005,” states, “Husband = Judas; Court = Sanhedrin, Jeb = Pilate, Bush = Caesar, Judge = Herod,” the latter referring to Pinellas County Circuit Judge Greer who has repeatedly denied legal attempts by the Schindler family to reinsert a feeding tube that was removed March 18 from Mrs. Schiavo.

And, yes, they even got John Edward to tell us that:

…she’s clear on what’s going — and I can tell you that she’s definitely clear on what’s happening now around her.

This is all a perfect example of why religion is bad. Take away the crazy assumptions and this is a clear cut case. If all the people involved were more used to using their brains to figure things out, they’d have let this unthinking corpse-shell expire long since. But instead we have a large number of people who are so used to abdicating their reason to their gut feelings, and so there is actually a debate about whether to carry out the wishes of this woman. The quality of that debate is also extremely typical, with massive vilification of the husband based entirely on the fact that he’s on the opposite side of the issue, so that they can ignore the fact that the only reason he’s putting himself through this ordeal is because he cares for his wife.

  2. John Howard:

Why doesn’t John Edward just go ask her what her wishes are? It would save us all a lot of trouble.

  3. Johnny:

Silly comment kevin I’m a christian that thinks…….. quit a clever christian actually, for you to suggest that were all stupid or that the stupidity of men or woman could reflect on God is repugnent.
plus think about it the supreme courts have obstructed her parents right to apeal…..
to have any chance to recieve a second opinion from another physisian.

And have you even thought about how he left her and has 5 kids to another lady before you start claiming that he just loves his wife…..

  4. sharona:

Wow … that would be a powerful argument if it were spelled correctly and had proper syntax. No, wait. Acutally, it wouldn’t because it’s just stupid.

And by the way, Schiavo has two children, not five. JAYZUS.

  5. Kevin:

Well Johnny, I’ll agree with you on one point- among christians, you would be rated as clever. And I didn’t say anything about god- assigning qualities to someone else’s fantasy doesn’t seem fruitful. The rest of your ‘arguement’ is so full of lies and misperceptions it merely demonstrates the validity of my first comment. Thanks for the help!

Doesn’t the Catholic church burn people like John Edward? Or at least exorcise them or something. Jeesh.
