Bush and Hitler agree: "God is with us"

21 December 2004 by Ron

“Amerikkka is turning fascist” themes are everywhere in left-leaning commentary these days; Buzzflash’s “God Is With Us”: Hitler’s Rhetoric and the Lure of “Moral Values” is a nice instance of this genre which focuses on some of the religious themes in particular. Starting from Just-Ass Scalia’s recent lies about how separation of church and state actually helped along the holocaust, Maureen Farrell launches into an excellent rant on the Nazi parallels to Bush’s Amerikkka. Just a tidbit or two:

Hitler, like some of the today’s politicians and preachers, politicized “family values.” He liked corporeal punishment in home and school. Jesus prayers became mandatory in all schools under his administration. While abortion was illegal in pre-Hitler Germany, he took it to new depths of enforcement, requiring all doctors to report to the government the circumstances of all miscarriages. He openly despised homosexuality and criminalized it… I am fighting for the work of the Lord…”

…Hitler wrote… “When was the last time a Western nation had a leader so obsessed with God and claiming God was on our side? If you answered Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany, you’re correct,” Bob Fitrakis wrote… Bush told Bob Woodward [on starting the Iraq war] “I was praying for strength to do the Lord’s will. . . .” Speaking in Berlin in March, 1936, Hitler said something remarkably similar. “I would like to thank Providence and the Almighty for choosing me of all people to be allowed to wage this battle for Germany,” he said, before launching the preventive war heard round the world….

…a few of the Fuhrer’s assertions: “Secular schools can never be tolerated because such a school has no religious instruction and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith.” “… “It will be the Government’s care to maintain honest cooperation between Church and State; the struggle against materialistic views and for a real national community is just as much in the interest of the German nation as in that of the welfare of our Christian faith.” “…we have restored to faith its prerequisites because we were convinced that the people need and require this faith. We have therefore undertaken the fight against the atheistic movement, and that not merely with a few theoretical declarations: we have stamped it out.”

Muslims gaining on Atheists’ “most despised religous group” title

19 December 2004 by Ron

Here’s a truly scary poll: Poll shows U.S. views on Muslim-Americans:

A recent survey by Cornell University found that found 44 percent of Americans favor at least some restrictions on the civil liberties of Muslim Americans… Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims’ civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious… 27 percent of respondents supported requiring all Muslim-Americans to register where they lived with the federal government.

Maybe we could give them armbands with the crescent moon and star on them while we’re at it.

Tex-ass Sex Ed

19 December 2004 by Bob

Abstinence-only attitudes don’t work? No way! Xians and sex, dude.
Study: Teen safe-sex laws are costly

Two laws in Texas that limit teenagers’ ability to confidentially obtain reproductive health care cost $44 million a year largely because of additional pregnancies, local researchers have found. [...] One requires teens younger than 18 to obtain parental consent before receiving prescription contraceptives, and the other requires health care providers to report to law enforcement agencies the identity of patients younger than 17 who they think are sexually active.

So, if your doctor thinks you’re sexually active, you actually get reported to the fucking cops. Nice. That’ll teach those xian teens. Praise Jesus. And here’s the punch line:

“If a young girl is afraid to talk to her parents about using contraceptives, then she knows she’s doing something wrong.”

Ah yes, the logic of xian pro-lifers once again becomes manifest.

The Munchkins of Dover

18 December 2004 by Bob

If anyone’s interested, you should check out the Dover Area School District Biology Curriculum. Some highlights:

Intelligent Design is an explanation of the origin of life that differs from DarwinΩ s view. The reference book, Of Pandas and People, is available for students who might be interested in gaining an understanding of what Intelligent Design actually involves.

Ummm, but clearly the ID movement doesn’t do that.

With respect to any theory, students are encouraged to keep an open mind. The school leaves the discussion of the Origins of Life to individual students and their families.

And why is this? Why is it the case that other areas of science that are equally supported don’t get this bullshit?

Because DarwinΩ s Theory is a theory, it continues to be tested as new evidence is discovered. The Theory is not a fact. Gaps in the Theory exist for which there is no evidence. A theory is defined as a well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations.

Oh yes, the “it’s just a theory” line. Huh?

18 December 2004 by Bob

You’ve GOT to be kidding: Reality of TV: It slams religion

To be counted as negative in the study, religion had to be treated in a derogatory manner or treated without respect in a specific instance.

Several incidents were cited, such as a Dec. 17 episode of Fox’s “That ’70s Show” that referred to a couple having sex next to a manger scene; an Aug. 5 episode of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” that referred to Catholicism as a religion that awards a “get-out-of-hell-free card” to anyone but pedophile priests; and a dialogue in a Feb. 10 episode of NBC’s “Will and Grace” in which sidekick Karen tells lead character Grace, “Let’s go buy that historic church and turn it into a gay bar.”

Oh my! What “slamming” these references be! Just lighten the fuck up, and enjoy all of your xmas songs about the virgin birth and the coming of the savior.
