The God puppets accelerate the government takeover

20 November 2004 by Ron

Think we’re kidding about the theocracy to come? The next wave is starting. In Congress, Negotiators Add Abortion Clause to Spending Bill:

Senate negotiators have tucked a potentially far-reaching anti-abortion provision into a $388 billion must-pass spending bill… The abortion language would bar federal, state and local agencies from withholding taxpayer money from health care providers that refuse to provide or pay for abortions or refuse to offer abortion counseling or referrals…. Some lawmakers and Congressional aides interpreted the House leaders’ insistence as reflection of the new political strength of the anti-abortion movement and of Christian conservatives, who played an important role in re-electing Mr. Bush this month….

At least one Dem isn’t rolling over and pointing their ass up in the air to be mounted: Senator Barbara Boxer (D-California) says she’ll use procedural tactics to slow Senate business to a crawl if the language isn’t changed. But given the new Senate Dem leadership, I’m thinking she’s not even going to get the support she needs for an effective filibuster.

Grilled Virgin Mary for sale

17 November 2004 by Ron

Some woman spotted the image of the Virgin Mary in a grilled cheese sandwich (after taking 1 bite) 10 years ago, saved it, and put it up on Ebay. Ebay pulled it for a while, saying they didn’t do joke auctions, but then changed their mind and put it back — maybe because they believed these people were serious. So, the Ten-Year-Old Grilled Cheese Sandwich Is Back On E-Bay.

The bidding is now so high that even if the sellers are serious, the buyers can’t be. Here’s the Ebay item listing.

And to see what makes Ebay great, just go search for “Virgin Mary grilled cheese”. Over 250 items riding parasitically on the Grilled Cheese Mary phenomenon.porno adult trailersvideo adult pornopornoghraphy adultavatars adult pornographicadult pornography australiaadult laws pornographyadult pornpicsskyy black adult pornstar Map

Anti-atheist Boy Scouts lose one

17 November 2004 by Ron

A tiny win for the good guys: The Pentagon has agreed — under pressure of an ACLU lawsuit — to stop sponsoring Boy Scout troops, since the Boy Scouts engage in explicit discrimination on both religious and sexual orientation grounds: Bases to be warned on Scouts support. As Adam Schwartz, ACLU lawyer, nicely put it: “If our Constitution’s promise of religious liberty is to be a reality, the government should not be administering religious oaths or discriminating based on religious beliefs.”

God (so to speak) bless the ACLU.

Pray No Work?

15 November 2004 by Bob

“Praying for someone” has always been a nice, neat-n-tidy way to make you think you’re actually DOING something for someone — when in fact you ain’t doin’ shit. But now we have the studies: The Columbia University ‘Miracle’ Study: Flawed and Fraud

The much-hyped Columbia University prayer study was flawed and suspicious from the start but now has been fatally tainted with fraud. The first-named author doesn’t respond to inquiries. The “lead” author said he didn’t learn of the study until months after it was completed. And now the mysterious third author, indicted by a federal grand jury, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud. All his previous studies must now be questioned.

Yeah, right: sit still, be quiet, and talk to yourself for 90 seconds — and your work is done. “We prayed for you at the beach today!” Wow, what a fucking sacrifice.

The Sunday scripture selections

14 November 2004 by Ron

I was going through some archives and noticed this, and thought I’d post it as a single document for our newer friends. It’s the Sunday Bible Passages weekly entries I did for a while last year, commenting on bit of scripture each week. Enjoy. Circulate. Just some little reminders of the wonders of the Bible.

In which I

10 November 2004 by Ron

A little techno-business: This blog has had an atom/xml/rss feed for a while, for those of you who use some kind of RSS aggregator (personally, I like Abilon). But for those of you who don’t want to run a desktop aggregator but wouldn’t mind joining the wave of the future by taking advantage of the whole feed aggregation phenomenon, My Yahoo! has recently done a nice upgrade to their (free) service that integrates RSS feed aggregation into your My Yahoo! page. Worth checking out, I think. And, of course, you can add this blog to your feeds with the button down with the other buttons at the bottom of right-hand sidebar of this page, or with this one right here:

Bush’s message to the nation’s non-Xians

9 November 2004 by Ron

Bush sends a little message to all the freethinkers and others who oppose the theocracy that God has told him to bring to the United States of Jesusland:

Bush gives the victory salute
