Theocracy, Inc.

9 September 2004 by Bob

So, I guess there’s this xian organization called Christian Exodus, and they want to have a theocratic state after they break free from the Union:

“The only Southern nationalist organization I have found with an ETI [estimated time of independence] is the South Carolina League of the South, which, according to state director Robert Hayes, is determined to be free of the union within 20 years,” the posting says. “I think we can move this date closer to the present with a managed emigration.” According to an article in a recent issue of Intelligence Report, the Southern Poverty Law Center’s journal on hate groups, there are higher concentrations of “antigovernment extremists” in parts of South Carolina than anywhere else in the United States, other than parts of the Ozarks and northern Idaho.

So, there ya go: South Carolina’s primed for Jesus! Watch your clocks (and your maps) for future happenings.

From Ivan, With Love (or God the Terrible)

9 September 2004 by Bob

Ah, just makes you want to fall to your knees and praise the fucker who kills you and destroys all your stuff.

At least 20 deaths across the southern Caribbean have been blamed on Ivan, the Associated Press reported. Eight deaths have been confirmed in Grenada, the Caribbean Disaster agency said.

In St. Georges, Grenada’s capital, the only buildings in “reasonable condition” are the Grenada General Hospital and the government headquarters, according to the disaster agency. Ivan destroyed the police headquarters and almost every school.

Schools? Education? That would involve thinking of some kind — and that’s not too godly, now, is it?

God Only Knows

7 September 2004 by Bob

Nice to be back, and just in time for Hurricane Ivan to hit next week. Yeah, God, love you too…dick…

And how great is God’s Love? Well, better than yours will ever be, according to Rev. Billy:

You may not know where your son is — but God does know, and God cares even more about him than you do.

Now, that’s not a nice thing to say about a mom’s attitude toward her son, Billy…

The War Of The Cross

5 September 2004 by Brent

Did you know that regardless of what our benevolent dictator President says, that in the Muslim world, his use of the phrase “crusade” to describe the ostensible “War On Terror” was received as a *gasp* religious war of Christianity vs. Islam?

When Bush's remark was translated into Arabic for broadcast throughout the Middle East, the word "crusade" was rendered as "war of the cross."

Before the Crusades, Christian theology had given central emphasis to the resurrection of Jesus, and to the idea of incarnation itself, but with the war of the cross, the bloody crucifixion began to dominate the Latin Christian imagination. A theology narrowly focused on the brutal death of Jesus reinforced the primitive notion that violence can be a sacred act. The cult of martyrdom, even to the point of suicidal valor, was institutionalized in the Crusades. . .

Now, either our President and his hand-picked cabinet are incompetent idiots who didn’t know this, or they knew it and used that language because they wanted the War On Terror to be received as a religious, Christian vs. Muslim thing.

Either choice is unacceptable.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

5 September 2004 by Ron

You might notice that things look a little different here. I updated the stuff under the hood, and as a result, there are a few visible (and functional) changes: The author and time/permalink are at the bottom of the posts now, and with them, there’s (a) an “email this post” link (the little envelope), and (b) a new “comment” link. I’ve moved the commenting to Blogger’s own system: On the plus side, it’s a better-looking and better-functioning comment system; on the minus, we lose all our old comments. (I have an archive, but there’s no way to import them.) So, let us observe a moment of silence for our past Xian visitors and their lame-ass^H^H^H^Hnoble attempts to save God-buddies from the regular ass-whuppin they get around here.

The grandson of “Hitler’s Angel”

4 September 2004 by Ron

A nice op-ed originally from the Columbus (OH) Free Press and reprinted by Common Dreams (Gott Mit Uns: On Bush and Hitler’s Rhetoric draws interesting parallels between the use of religion by Bush and Hitler. Here’s a fun tidbit or two:

When was the last time a Western nation had a leader so obsessed with God and claiming God was on our side? If you answered Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany, you’re correct. Nothing can be more misleading than to categorize Hitler as a barbaric pagan or Godless totalitarian, like Stalin. Both Bush and Hitler believe that they were chosen by God to lead their nations. With Hitler boldly proclaiming, before launching his doctrine of preventive war against all of Europe, that “I would like to thank Providence and the Almighty for choosing me of all people to be allowed to wage this battle for Germany.” “I follow the path assigned to me by Providence with the instinctive sureness of a sleepwalker,” Hitler said.

Hitler stated in February 1940, “But there is something else I believe, and that is that there is a God. . . . And this God again has blessed our efforts during the past 13 years.” After the Iraqi invasion, Bush announced, “God told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did . . . .” … Like Bush-ites, Hitler was fond of invoking the Ten Commandments as the foundation of Nazi Germany: “The Ten Commandments are a code of living to which there’s no refutation. These precepts correspond to irrefragable needs of the human soul.”

But my favorite part is the closer: “Bush’s assertion that “I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job” brings to mind God as a dull-witted, cognitively-impaired nationalist unable to utter a simple declarative sentence who spends his time preaching “blessed are the warmongers and profit-makers.”

(”Hitler’s Angel”, you ask? It’s what the the New York Tribune called W’s gramps for his financial support of the Hitler’s rise to power.)
