Axis of Logic has a decent piece (GOP’s `Christian nation’, by Cathy Young) about the fact that the the Republican Party of Texas (home of the Shrub), has put a plank in its platform affirming that “the United States of America is a Christian nation.” Some tidbits:

The plank, which also pooh-poohs “the myth of the separation of church and state,” has not been rejected by the national Republican Party… in contrast to a similar flap in 1992: A statement by then-Mississippi Governor Kirk Fordice at a Republican governors’ convention that “the United States is a Christian nation” was met with rebukes from leading Republicans, and Fordice eventually had to apologize….

Some conservatives in the media have not merely refused to criticize the “Christian nation” plank but rallied to its defense… the Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly described the plank as “largely symbolic” response to secularist activists and judges who would throw God out of the public square. On another Fox News show, “Hannity & Colmes,” guest host Mike Gallagher suggested that objections to the plank stemmed from anti-Christian “bigotry.”

Ah, those anti-Xian bigots. Who do they think they are, claiming the country might also be for non-Xians?

The Shrubbies are joining the Catholic Church in demanding that those beholden to them (in this case, anybody getting federal money) in undermining HIV prevention by undermining condom use and safe-sex education.

New regulations from President Bush’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta… will be mandatory for any organization that does HIV-prevention work and also receives federal funds…. These new regs require the censoring of any “content” — including “pamphlets, brochures, fliers, curricula,” “audiovisual materials” and “pictorials (for example, posters and similar educational materials using photographs, slides, drawings or paintings),” as well as “advertising” and Web-based info. They require all such “content” to eliminate anything even vaguely “sexually suggestive” or “obscene”– like teaching how to use a condom correctly by putting it on a dildo, or even a cucumber. And they demand that all such materials include information on the “lack of effectiveness of condom use” in preventing the spread of HIV and other STDs — in other words, the Bush administration wants AIDS fighters to tell people: Condoms don’t work… under the new regs, political appointees will have a veto and be able to ban anything in those educational materials they deem “obscene” or lacking in anti-condom propaganda…. Under the new regs, it will be impossible even to track the spread of unsafe sexual practices — because the CDC’s politically inspired censorship includes “questionnaires and survey materials” and thus would forbid asking people if they engage in specific sexual acts without protection against HIV. For that too would be “obscene.”

A Montana Mormon leader has been caught in an internet sex sting:

A leader in the Mormon Church was arrested in an Internet sex sting after allegedly arranging to meet a 14-year-old girl in Idaho…. Hildreth, 51, of Dillon, was charged in federal court with one felony count of using the Internet to knowingly attempt to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity… Over the past two months, police said, Hildreth corresponded with Boise detectives posing as a 14-year-old girl in an online chat room and sent explicit images of himself.

OK, two comments:

(1) The “explicit pictures” are dicey, but I think extra young wives are OK on the Mormon view? If there wasn’t the porn thing, how bad would Mormons think this was?

(2) I love to see the “pious” fall, and a sex sting embarrassment is always fun. But to be fair, this is legal bullshit. NO MINOR WAS INVOLVED. Mormon Guy pretended to be a 14-year-old girl, did net sex stuff with some detective who was also pretending to be a 14-year-old girl. No minor was enticed, exposed to porn, or anything else. This isn’t illegal; it’s the bread-and-butter of AOL chatrooms. It’s not illegal to pretend. It’s not illegal to be fooled by the pretending.
