French ban on religious attire and symbols?
12 December 2003 by GlennA French commission has recommended that “conspicuous” religious attire and symbols be banned from public schools. (Ban Religious Attire in School, French Panel Says). While I am generally in favor of any measures that strengthen the separation of church and state, I don’t know about this. In American constitutional parlance, isn’t this “prohibiting the free exercise” of religion? It seems like the main motive for the action is to ban Muslim head scarves. While the idea that women should have to cover their heads is offensive and stupid, people in a free society should have a right to be offensive and stupid. Any thoughts?
