Boston Globe rejects the “two coercive words”

17 October 2003 by Ron

In their editorial Two coercive words, the Globe — slightly awkwardly — at least comes down on the right side of the issue: “God needs no protection from Congress or the Supreme Court. The unpopular right to believe in many gods, or in no god, does.” How many other papers would do that?

The Others

16 October 2003 by Bob

If you want a good laugh, go read ‘Under God’ has a place in our pledge. Of the numerous tidbits, here is one that made me smile:

Indeed, schools should not favor one religion over another. If the phrase said “under Jesus” or “under Buddha,” there would be good reason for unrest among nonbelievers and those sympathetic to their cause.

But “under God” provides many meanings — for Christians, Jews, Muslims and others. With so many different beliefs and religious practices, “under God” lends itself to a multitude of interpretations.

That “Christians, Jews, Muslims and others” part really cracked me up. Others? You mean all those people who aren’t monotheists? I’m sure that’s gotta be only about one or two people…

Leave it to xians to make stupid assumptions like this. Nothing’s changed since Rome, folks. Either xians kill them off, or they assimilate them. Here, it’s the assumption of assimilation that pisses me off. It’s all the same shit, and that’s why so many xians think xmas is an American holiday.

It’s that whole we-all-believe-the-same-thing-in-the-end bullshit attitude.

Well, ya don’t. Ya really, really don’t.

God’s date with the Supremes

14 October 2003 by Ron

It’s official: They’re taking the pledge case. Supreme Court to Decide Pledge Case And Scalia is recusing himself. Gotta say, I’m real surprised at that. Is he that sure of a win, or did he realize that he really had violated the rule? He is gonna be beyond pissed if they get a 4-4 tie.

Pledge Update

14 October 2003 by Bob

Just something I received off of the atheist newswire:

If the case does come to argument, Justin Antonin Scalia will reportedly recuse himself from proceedings. News reports say that this is because of remarks he made earlier this year critical of the lower court ruling in the pledge case. That raises the possibility that the high court could deadlock 4-4 in U.S. V NEWDOW, in which case the Ninth Circuit ruling would stand.

I think a deadlock would be kinda cool, personally…

Utah Medicine

14 October 2003 by Bob

An interesting story in Utah. Utah Medical Neglect Case Opens New Front

Parker Jensen was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, an aggressive cancer that most commonly afflicts adolescents. A tumor was removed from the soft palate of Parker’s mouth six months ago, and the Jensens say it may never have been cancerous, despite the diagnosis of at least five doctors.

So they remove the tumor, and the parents think the kid is fine. But the doctors (in filing a complaint with the state) want to prescribe follow-up treatments, and the parents think that’s not necessary.

But the doctors who filed the complaint say microscopic cancer cells are impossible to detect. Without chemotherapy, they say Parker’s cancer is a time bomb waiting to explode and spread rapidly through his body. By then, doctors say, chemotherapy would be ineffective.

Sunday Bible Passage

12 October 2003 by Ron

I think we need a new weekly feature: The Sunday Bible Passage. I kick it off this week with one of my all-time favorites: 2 Kings 2:23-24, in which the prophet Elisha has 42 children torn apart by bears for having made fun of his baldness:

[2:23] And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
[2:24] And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.
