Defending the general ’s crusade against Satan

25 October 2003 by Ron

Just in case you thought nobody would defend Gen. Boykin, because that was just all too beyond, think again: From the always frighteningly idiotic WorldNetDaily, “I agree with the general”. And of course, the ever-dangerous Focus on the Family folks also back him up: Focus on the Family Decries Media Lambasting of Lt. General Boykin; Worldwide Ministry Alarmed at Anti-Christian Attacks. Those anti-christians! Do they know no bounds of decency?

Now That’s More Like It

23 October 2003 by Bob

It’s just a letter, but the beliefs (I’m sure) are probably held by more people than you’d expect: Bible should be a bedrock of society.

If we take our religion seriously, how can we tolerate clerics who do not embrace all the teachings of the Bible?

Yes, that’s right. Let’s embrace all the bullshit homophobia, sexism, and violence that’s in there. But here’s the clincher:

If I am right, then democracy is the reason why, for example, the commandments, the very basis of law in this country, are being removed from courthouses. Democracy dictates that we should never offend other people, no matter how flatly they contradict God’s Word. After all, democratically speaking, their word, their vote, is just as valid as ours. How could we ever “force” our opinion on someone else? The Bible says that we should do God’s work, let the chips fall where they may. Am I alone in thinking that these two are diametrically opposed?

I am very much afraid that, without an element of compulsion, the Christian Church, although not perhaps Christianity itself, is bound to die of anemia.

“Consequently, it will perish.” Amen.

Orange & Black, On the Rocks (with a Twist)

21 October 2003 by Bob

Nice little story about a high school newspaper in Colorado: Award-winning high school paper under attack for challenging pledge

The Orange & Black, judged the state’s best high school newspaper, is under attack for suggesting that requiring students to cite the pledge of allegiance is fascist. The newspaper published a picture of student high school students giving a fascist salute as they recited the pledge.

I just think it’s cool that a high school paper had the ovaries to do that shit in the first place.

In other Pledge stuff, I like the way another student paper puts the issue:

While all the pundits wax on about the pledge’s historical significance — and furthermore, God’s historical significance in the founding of this nation — they are pushing their own double standard when one understands the true history behind the pledge. The McCarthyist era isn’t a history we particularly promote remembering with reverence.

I really like this twist in phrasing. That totally cracked me up. And I think that about sums things up for me.

His Eyes Have Seen the Glory. . .

20 October 2003 by Kimberly

I’m surprised no one has posted about General Boykin, who has been giving speeches at churches (while in uniform) discussing the war on terrorism as essentially a war between Christianity and Islam. “He spoke of Islamic extremists hating the United States because ‘we’re a Christian nation’ and added that our ’spiritual enemy will only be defeated if we come against them in the name of Jesus.’ He said that President Bush ‘is in the White House because God put him there,’ and that ‘we in the army of God . . . have been raised for such a time as this.’”

Here’s my favorite Boykin quote: “Discussing a U.S. Army battle against a Muslim warlord in Somalia in 1993, Boykin told one audience: ‘I knew my god was bigger than his. I knew that my god was a real god and his was an idol.’” Yeah.

This week’s word of God

19 October 2003 by Ron

Sunday again, so we honor the Xian sabbath with some of God’s words from the bible. Here, in the book of Numbers, God’s chosen people (the Israelites) have, under the leadership of Moses, conquered the Midianites, killed all the men, taken their livestock and goods, and burned their cities. God’s right hand man Moses then commands his army:

Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known a man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.” (Numbers 31:17-18)

Because, everyone knows, the most pious and humane of conquering armies don’t slaughter everyone — only all men, boys, and women who have had sex. Little virgin girls they keep for themselves as the spoils of war. So God commands.

God Takes Care of Us, Too

17 October 2003 by Bob

In an attempt to counteract the extremely hostile content of Ron’s coloring book post (gasp!), you should check out Joseph’s Colorful Coat Coloring Page. I’m sure all of you will become comforted knowing that God is taking care of all of us. Plus, when you read the text, you’ll really crack up…

Not Too Bright?

17 October 2003 by Kimberly

Another article critical of the “Bright” image (from CSICOP). This one is fairly intelligent and has an interesting critique of “how could Dawkins and Dennett not see how this was going to backfire?”
