Fear and loathing in the “under God” pledge case

22 July 2003 by Ron

A couple new developments on the pledge “under God” case: Everybody and their uncles are printing an AP piece that tries to make the pledge case into just a family spat. But more interestingly, it says that “The Bush administration has suggested the Supreme Court could erase the ruling by the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco without even scheduling arguments. The administration said Banning, not Newdow, has the sole responsibility to make decisions about the girl’s health, education, and welfare.” So, they want Newdow denied standing rather than the court making a ruling. Running scared, I think.

Here’s one of the instances of the AP piece: Family feud plays out in Pledge case

God has mercy, doesn’t kill girl after all

20 July 2003 by Ron

Thank you God, for not finishing me off after you wrecked my house, ripped me from my family, and broke my bones.

Girl swept away by flood tells of ordeal
Mom says both saved by God (A.P 7/19/03)

…the pigtailed 12-year-old… recalled how her family’s mobile home was swept away by flash floods…. Rescuers found Theresa nearly three miles down Prather Creek from where she slipped out of her mother’s grasp in Loretto on June 17. She suffered severe injuries, including an open break in her left leg and an infection in both legs.

Mary Hartley said divine intervention is the only reason she and her daughter are alive… “(The house) was split wide open. We were holding onto each other… Then (the water) took her down the creek and it pulled me under the house, so we were separated. We prayed to God to help us through this and to keep us safe, and he did.”

We need a name for these stories,

I guess people don’t like it when the Cat-lickers stick to their principles:

Members of a New Mexico family are suing their local Catholic church over a funeral mass in which the priest allegedly said their relative was only a middling Catholic and going straight to hell…. Court papers say that Father Scott Mansfield said at Mr Martinez’s funeral last year that the deceased was “living in sin”, “lukewarm in his faith” and that “the Lord vomited people like Ben out of his mouth to hell”.

I guess it’s OK to have a religion that sends folks to hell for these things in principle, but not in practice. Hey folks, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Family sues over prediction of hell. (Our cohort The Raving Atheist has some further commentary on this today, too.)

Pat, Satan, Adolf, and the homos

18 July 2003 by Ron

Pat, Pat, Pat. Sometimes I worry that picking on Pat lets “moderate” Xians feel progressive and rational and superior (”Oh, that’s just what wacky Christians do!”), and I don’t want to support that. But he’s so much fun, it’s hard to resist. A couple of nice Pat quotes to fit with the theme:

“Many of those people involved with Adolph Hitler were Satanists, many of them were homosexuals–the two things seem to go together.”

“It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-biased media and the homosexuals who want to destroy all Christians.”

“[Homosexuals] are sinning against God and will lead to the ultimate destruction of the family and our nation. I am unalterably opposed to such things, and will do everything I can to restrict the freedom of these people to spread their contagious infection to the youth of this nation.”

You go, girl.

Pat Robertson doesn’t like sodomy

17 July 2003 by Glenn

Robertson wants God to get the liberals to retire from the Supreme Court, but you get the sense that he thinks it’s time for God to whack a few of them incest-lovers:

Robertson, as host of “The 700 Club” on his Christian Broadcasting Network, earlier this month began the 21-day “Operation Supreme Court Freedom.” He is asking people to pray to God to change the court after its 6-3 decision in June that decriminalized sodomy.

Robertson said in a letter posted on CBN’s Web site that the ruling “has opened the door to homosexual marriage, bigamy, legalized prostitution and even incest.”

Robertson’s letter did not identify anyone, but appeared to refer to specific justices, saying: “One justice is 83 years old, another has cancer, and another has a heart condition. Would it not be possible for God to put it in the minds of these three judges that the time has come to retire?”

Newsweek says “God Bless America” sucks

17 July 2003 by Ron

Here’s a light but fun little op-ed from Newsweek arguing for going back to the traditional “Take me out to the ball game” as the seventh-inning stretch song and ditching the wretched (and despicable) “God Bless Amerikkka”: Play Ball, Not Prayers
