I was reminded of this piece recently, and I can’t find a post here pointing to it. Think this “theocracy” talk is hyperbole? Think again, after reading Jesus Plus Nothing from the March 2003 Harper’s.

On the importance of religious faith in the grounding of morality: Bishop is arrested in fatal hit-run. First, he makes a deal to avoid prosecution for putting known child-molesting priests into new parishes to molest new kids. Now, he runs a guy down and flees and hides, only to be tracked down by the cops. What would we do without the moral leadership provided by church leaders?gigantic nipplesnude russianasians younggangbang thaibad bitchporn dildobitches fatxxx lolita Map

Not to give our “Royal Navy” admirer more attention then she deserves (which we probably already have), but reading it reminded my of one of those odd things you often get from Xians: In the passage Bob quotes below, the “tradeoff” is that she doesn’t “go around yelling that all my friends will go to hell”, while we’re supposed to “not think I’m a raging idiot for believing in God”. So the religion she accepts has us A-ists going to burn in hell forever, but at least she politely doesn’t yell that at us; we, in exchange, should not even think this is idiotic, much less say it. Aside from one of these constraints being on private thought and the other on public action, there’s this bizarre suggestion that thinking someone’s beliefs are wrong and maybe even idiotic is somehow comparable or even worse than condemning them (quietly and politely, of course) to eternal damnation.

Of course, this is just the kind of thing that emphasizes the degree to which Xians are mostly in some bizarre state of dissonance: If those beliefs were true, they’d be unbelievably important; but the people are mostly normal enough to be unwilling or unable to see them as unbelievably important.

RE: Royal Navy Academy Xian, I found part of the post to say the following:

I don’t go around yelling that all my friends will go to hell if they don’t convert to my religion…and they don’t think I’m a raging idiot for believing in God. It works very well; we understand each others’ viewpoints. They’re equally valid, but we don’t necessarily agree.

Now, one might ask: How can two contradictory positions be “equally valid”? Oh yeah, I forgot — the whole “hey-no-one-can-ever-really-know-the-truth-about-God-so-we’re-both-equal-in-the-end” bullshit. How to sneak in a very convenient epistemology…
