Good article. Of course, even if you did believe this bullshit spouted, wasn’t the question about his favorite POLITICAL philosopher? And however you twist it, “Jesus” is a stupid answer to that. I’m sticking with the view that the smirking chimp doesn’t actually know the name of any political philosophers.

Does anyone know that quote from N. about deathbed conversions to priests being like seducing a woman (or something)?…

I’ve been trying to get the reference for weeks, and I can’t find it anywhere…

“I say you don’t open yourself to all urgings; you control them. Just like an alcoholic.”‘ That’s great. Reminds me of one of my all-time favorite Onion pieces: Church Group Offers Homosexual New Life in Closet.

When Drew & I were returning from the APA, I heard that show! I was disappointed that they only really got into the pat and simplistic arguments against religion, but other than that it was pretty interesting.

FYI, there’s a radio show on WBAI, an independent station in NYC, called “Equal Time For Freethought”. I’ve never caught the show itself (Sundays, 6:30-7:00pm), but their web page often has interesting news updates about atheism, religious freedom, etc. WBAI broadcasts on the web (go to the station’s web page ). This week’s guest will be Michael Newdow, the plaintiff in the “under God” pledge case.

There’s an article in today’s New York Times about gay-straight clubs in high schools. The highlight of the article has to be this part, about a Baptist minister who is opposed to one such club at a high school in Kentucky:

‘Enter the Rev. Tim York of the Heritage Temple Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. York calls the club “dangerous.” He says: “I believe God made male and female. I believe what the Bible says in Romans. I condemn the act of homosexuality.” Mr. York is concerned that the club will be used to turn Boyd [High School] students into homosexuals. (Mrs. King, the club sponsor, says she has been prohibited from even saying hello to one student whose parents fear he could be turned gay.)

“Homosexuality is a choice people make,” Mr. York says. When, occasionally, one of his own members confesses to such feelings, Mr. York recommends hunting deeper for God’s grace. “I say you don’t open yourself to all urgings; you control them. Just like an alcoholic.”‘

Here’s the whole article.
